CHAMP for Pediatrics Providers

A free peer-to-peer consultation and
educational service for pediatric care
providers in Mississippi

Who We Are

The CHild Access to Mental Health and Psychiatry program (CHAMP) is a free peer-to-peer consultation and educational service for pediatric primary care providers in Mississippi. In conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, the University of Mississippi Medical Center's (UMMC) Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, CHAMP is grant-funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide free and same-day peer-to-peer telephone consultations to pediatric primary care providers in Mississippi.

UMMC child psychiatrists and child psychologists offer these consultations with an educational focus. The CHAMP team supports primary care providers (doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) who see patients age 21 and under with questions about mental health care, such as diagnostic clarification, medication adjustment, or treatment planning. Using CHAMP is at no cost at any time primary care providers or their practice.

The CHAMP team hopes to enroll pediatric primary care providers as collaborative team members who are willing to work with us in a consultation model of care. The CHAMP team operates out of the Center for the Advancement of Youth Clinic (CAY) in Jackson. CHAMP partners with Families as Allies, a statewide organization run by and for families of children with behavioral challenges, to provide direct support to families, to support providers in partnering with families, and to ensure the project is implemented and sustained in ways that work best for children and families.

How Our Process Works

How Our Process Works

  1. A primary care provider (doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant) identifies a health concern in one of their pediatric patients. The provider can then reach out to the CHAMP Consult Line for clinical guidance on the evidenced-based options to treat the mental health concern.
  2. CHAMP responds by conducting a brief intake to understand the primary concern and the clinical history. The CHAMP coordinator will then assign a CHAMP Mental Health specialist to call the provider.
  3. A CHAMP Mental Health Specialist (Psychologist, Psychiatrist, or Social Worker) calls the provider and conducts a mental health consultation. Consultations usually involve medication management, behavioral interventions, screening, or referral assistance. CHAMP continues to be available for educational consultations as needed for either the same patient or a new patient.
